You knew potatoes were versatile, but have you ever tried making potatoes in the smoker? I was initially skeptical, but the smoker gives the potatoes such an amazing depth of smoke flavor and great taste. These Smoked Potato Recipes are my family’s favorite smoked side dishes and I know yours will love them as well.

It’s no secret that I love to smoke food, and I smoke meat every chance I get! But when my old lady wanted to put potatoes in the pellet grill smoker I thought she was kidding. Now I think she’s a genius!
I started trying all my potato side dishes in the smoker. With amazing results every time!
This collection of my best smoked potato side dishes and main meals to go with them is sure to have you wondering why you’ve never smoked potatoes before!
Why You’ll Love These Smoked Potatoes Recipes
- Great for BBQs, potlucks, tailgating, or just a simple Saturday dinner.
- They’re all traditional recipes made with simple ingredients you probably already love.
- The potatoes absorb the great smoky mesquite or hickory flavor, depending on the type of wood, like you wouldn’t believe!

Types of Potatoes
There are generally three types of potatoes: starchy, waxy, and “all purpose” potatoes that fall in the middle.
Starchy potatoes, like Russet or Idaho potatoes have less moisture and tend to be fluffier and crispier when cooked. They are good for baked potatoes, french fries, and home fries. But they don’t really hold up in soups and stews and tend to fall apart.
Waxy or all-purpose potatoes, like red potatoes or yukon gold potatoes are better for those recipes. Waxy potatoes have a denser texture and more moisture. They’re great for potato salads, soups, roasted potatoes, etc
All-purpose potatoes are great for baking or crisping as well as soups and stews.
Starchy – Russet potatoes or Idaho potatoes
Waxy – Red potatoes, fingerling potatoes
All-Purpose – Yukon gold potatoes, white potatoes, blue potatoes
Tips & Tricks
These are just a few additional tips and tricks to get the best potato smoked side dishes.
- Oven-baked recipes like casseroles are perfect on a pellet smoker.
- Be aware that most glass bakeware will stain when smoked.
- Smoke the dishes uncovered to allow smoke to penetrate the food.
- Use foil pans for less dishes to clean when you’re done.
