Smoke Baked Potatoes have become a new family favorite! I can’t believe that I had never tried this before, baked potatoes have always been a go-to side dish for me. The best part is that smoked baked potatoes don’t heat up the house on a hot day and the smoke flavor in them is amazing!

Now we always seem to have issues coming up with side dishes the adults like that the kids will also eat! Since we tend to smoke everything under the sun it only made sense to make smoked baked potatoes right?? The only problem I have right now is how did we wait this long to do baked potatoes this way??

What You Need To Make Smoke Baked Potatoes:

  • Large Baking Potatoes
  • Olive Oil
  • Fresh Ground Garlic Salt

How To Make Pitboss smoked baked potatoes :

Wash and pat dry your potatoes, you will want to do this to make sure that you have removed all the dirt off of them.

I left these to sit while I went outside and got my Pit Boss Pellet Grill Smoking.  Now I personally use the Pit Boss Pro 1100 from Lowes, if you don’t have Lowes Walmart and Amazon carry other Pit Boss options or Pit Boss website themselves. This will also work in any electric or pellet smoker as well.

I used Pit Boss Grills Mesquite pellets but you can use any flavor of pellets to smoke your baked potatoes.

Money and time saving tips from the old lady. If you order pellets online from Walmart and spend $35, they will drop them off at your door for free!! Their everyday price on pit boss pellets is amazing, plus the expert grill brand has a great price. (see them ->here)

Once I had my Pellet Grill rolling smoke I set it at 225 degrees with the P Setting at P7.

Take a fork or a long kabob skewer and stab each potato over and over. This will allow the moisture to escape but also for the smoke to go into the potato as well. Same as the oven potatoes will explode without the holes in the potatoes.

Baking potatoes Rubbed with olive Oil And garlic salt before smoking

Next, rub down your potatoes with olive and then grind salt over them.  I used a Trader Joe’s Garlic Salt Grinder but any salt will work.

Set on your rack in your smoker and allow it to smoke for at least two hours.  If you want you can rotate them but I prefer to set it and forget it.

Test your potato is done with a fork before removing it from the smoker.

How Long Smoke Baked Potatoes

Now you will get a couple of different answers on this one.  I googled quite a bit before doing this. You can turn the temperature up to 375/400 and be done in an hour.  However, 225 for 2 hours will allow the most flavor and I have to say it was spot on for the skin crisp and smoky flavor of the potato.

How To Use Up Leftover Smoked Baked Potatoes:

  • Twice Baked Grilled Potatoes
  • Loaded Baked Potatoes
  • Smoked Baked Potato Salad
  • Potato Soup
  • In A Casserole
