Now, having a big stockpot comes in handy quite often. I have made Smoked Turkey NoodlesSmoked Pork Chili, Gumbo, Chicken Noodle Soup, Broth, and so much more!! A tall stockpot is a must when cooking with carcasses from your smoked meat; the height leaves room for bones and lots of broth. Now, I am normally a crockpot or dutch oven man for soups and stews, but boiling down the bone to add flavor requires the stovetop, or it will take three to four times as long.

How To Make Smoked Ham Split Pea Soup:

Start your stockpot boiling with water, you will want enough water to cover the hambone.  If you don’t have a smoked ham you can use a slow cooker ham bone for this step.

Now you will have to add water as it boils the bone and other ingredients since some of the water will evaporate.

Chop your onion and vegetables.

Once your pot is boiling add in your leftover ham bone, Bouillon, Minced Garlic, Bay Leaves, Thyme, Basil, and chopped onion. I used Better Than Bouillon vegetable base on my soup.

Use a large slotted spoon, tongs, or strainer with a handle to pull out your ham bone from the mixture.

Add to the stockpot diced Carrots, Celery, Dried Split Peas, and Diced Ham.

Add more water if necessary as well.

Allow to boil for about another hour and serve.

How To Store Leftover Ham Split Pea Soup

To store the leftover spit pea and ham soup place in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to three to four days.

The soup can be frozen for up to three months in freezer safe containers.

Storing leftovers properly requires the right tools! My preferred storage method is if the leftovers can be sealed in a food saver. If not, then an air-tight container or Ziploc bag for the fridge is the way I go. The air-tight container and a freezer Ziploc bag are the next best bet for freezing the leftovers. I also use a food scale to measure portions and divide them into serving sizes.
