Smoked Ham Pot Pie Recipe

This smoked ham pot pie recipe is perfect for those easter dinner recipes. Pot Pie is one of those comfort foods, and let’s face it, a flaky crust makes the dish even better. I love that the pie crust absorbs the flavor of the smoke while it cooks on a pellet grill.

Now the old lady likes to pick up meat at the grocery store when it’s on sale. So we end up with extra hams to cook throughout the year. I will not complain because I love a good smoked ham outside of Christmas dinner and Easter Dinner. And let’s face it, leftovers with smoked meat are fantastic! Chicken Pot Pie is a popular recipe on my site, so an easy ham pot pie recipe had to follow suite.

Making comfort food on the pellet grill makes sit the ultimate comfort food! And let’s face it, cooking outside is a total win. I made this on my Pitboss Pro 1100, which can also be made on a Trager Pellet Grill or any other pellet grill. (Amazon has Pitboss’s too -> here)

Smoked homemade Ham pot pie ingredients

  • Pie Crust– You can use either store-bought or homemade pie crust. Personally, store-bought is my go-to for saving time, but if homemade pie crust is something you enjoy, it can be used with this recipe.
  • Cubed Ham– Use leftover crockpot ham, smoked ham, diced ham steak, or store-bought diced ham to put in the pot pie.
  • Peas and Carrots
  • Cream of Chicken– You can also use cream of potato soup instead of cream of chicken. The little potatoes in this can add fantastic flavor to the pot pie.
  • Cream of Mushroom– If you don’t want mushrooms, you can use cream of celery or cream of asparagus.
  • Pepper
  • Egg
  • Garlic Salt

How To Make Ham Pot Pie

Grease a pie pan with a nonstick spray; because I am putting this in the smoker, I used an aluminum pan to dispose of it after it was gone. You can use a pie plate but know the smoker will stain the dish.

*You can use Cast Iron, a large skillet pan, or a pie plate to make this in the smoker. *

Make your pie crust if you need to, if not a store bought pie crust will still give a flaky pie crust for this dish. Using store bought makes this recipe for ham pot pie so much easier.

Lay one of the pie crusts into the bottom of the greased pie dish. This will be the bottom crust of the pot pie.

In a small bowl, crack the egg and beat the egg with a fork.

Take a pastry brush and brush the bottom crust with the eggwash.

Smoked Ham Shredded Mixed with peas and carrots

Cook your peas and carrots, strain if needed. I used a steam cook bag for my peas and carrots, so no draining was needed.

Warm your leftover ham if needed; I used the reheat function on my microwave for this step.

Smoked Ham Pot Pie Filling Mixed All together

Combine your cooked peas and carrots, ham, cram of soups, and seasonings in a large mixing bowl. I used the old lady’s 8-cup Pryex measuring cup for this; the handle and spout made putting the creamy filling into the crust easy.

Scrap the pot pie filling into the pie tin with the crust using a spatula.

Carefully lay your second pie crust over the top of the pie filling and bottom crust.

Crimp together the edges of your dish; I did this by just squeezing the pieces together. Seal the crusts of the entire pie to keep the contents in the pie dish as it cooks.

Smoked Ham Pot Pie Crust Egg Washed and Slits Cut in

Take the pastry brush and brush the top of the pie crust with more of the egg wash.

With a knife, create four slits in the top of the pot pie; this will help with the ventilation of the pie while it is cooking.

How To Smoke Ham Pot Pie

Turn your smoker onto the smoke setting. I used a mesquite pellet when I smoked my ham pot pit, but any pellets will work for this recipe.

Money and time-saving tips from the old lady. If you order pellets online from Walmart and spend $35, they will drop them off at your door for free!! Their everyday price on pit boss pellets is amazing, plus the expert grill brand has a great price. (see them ->here)

Once you are rolling smoke, place your pot pie on the pellet grill racks. You can place a baking sheet under the tin if it overflows out of the pans. (it will stain just an FYI)

Smoked Ham Pot Pie On Pitboss Pellet Grill Before Smoking

Allow to smoke for about 30 minutes, then turn the smoker to 350 degrees.

After your pot pie has been cooked in the pellet smoker for 45 minutes, turn the smoker up to 400 degrees. (My Pitboss jumps from 350 to 400 if you have in-between degrees, you can turn to one of those and add time)

Allow to cook at 400 degrees until golden brown for about 15-20 minutes; this may vary if your smoker increases in temperature.

*Cooking times will vary if your smoker is not maintaining temperature or having problems getting to temperature quickly. *
